‘Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3’ Hits Over Half A Billion Dollars In Sales On Opening Weekend

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3's sales are still hot as ever

What’s bigger than dinosaurs? Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, actually.

The first-person shooter launched last week brought in more money over its opening weekend than Hollywood’s “Jurassic World.”

Activision, the publisher behind Call of Duty: Black Op 3 confirmed that its latest gaming franchise was the biggest entertainment launch of the year.

“In its first three days, the blockbuster title exceeded $550 million in sell-through worldwide, according to Activision estimates. The opening weekend haul is the biggest entertainment launch of 2015, including theatrical box office, music and book launches,” the company stated on its website.

That’s more than double Hollywood’s best opening weekend for 2015 with “Jurassic World” which raked in $209 million when it opened to theaters last June 12. Comparing videogame sales versus movie ticket sales like comparing apples to oranges.

Games cost $60; movies cost $15. Beyond revenue numbers, it could be argued that more people bought tickets to “Jurassic World” than copies of Black Ops 3. At the same time, games could be well worth their $60 price tag while a movie certainly would not be worth just as much.

That being said, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 still tops the charts regardless of what form of media it’s being compared to. In the realm of videogames, Black Ops 3’s sales figures still bests even Microsoft’s Halo 5: Guardians which “only” made $400 million during the week of its Oct. 27 release.

As impressive as the Black Ops 3’s launch figures are, they aren’t the best throughout the history of the franchise.Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 actually made $500 million after just 24 hours on shelves. That is remarkable. Activision surely won’t point that out in their press release for Black Ops 3, but they do also reveal that 75 million hours have been spent so far playing the game.

We’re still waiting for Fallout 4’s sales figures to be announced and even then there will be one more blockbuster game to watch out for, the Star Wars Battlefront. Then we’ll see if Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 still holds its ground as the biggest entertainment launch of 2015.
