Dark Souls Confirmed for Xbox One Backward Compatibility

Microsoft confirms that the first Dark Souls game is coming to Xbox One through Xbox 360 backward compatibility, and will be free to those that pre-order Dark Souls 3.

The list of Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One keeps growing, as Microsoft has now confirmed that the original Dark Souls is being added to the lineup. Furthermore, Xbox One owners wanting to play the original Dark Souls and plan on picking up Dark Souls 3 as well should be aware that Dark Souls 3 pre-orders come with a free digital copy of the original game for a limited time.

This information actually leaked yesterday, along with details for the Dark Souls 3 season pass. Microsoft’s official confirmation of the original Dark Souls as a pre-order bonus seems to suggest that the other information in the leak is also true. While Bandai Namco has yet to make an official statement on the matter, it’s now safe to assume that Dark Souls 3 season pass owners can look forward to at least two expansion packs for the game.

In the meantime, there are still details regarding the original Dark Souls coming to Xbox One that have yet to be answered. For example, it’s unknown at this point if the Artorias of the Abyss DLC that released for the game will be making its way to the backward compatibility list as well. Most 360 games on Xbox One do include their accompanying DLC, but it’s a possibility that Dark Souls on Xbox One will just be the vanilla experience.

Dark Souls Reviews Bonfire

Regardless of any Dark Souls DLC coming to Xbox One, hopefully the addition of the game to the Xbox One backward compatibility list means that Dark Souls 2 will also make its way to the service at some point. Even though an enhanced version of Dark Souls 2 is available on the system, it would be nice for those that already own the game on 360 to be able to play it on Xbox One without having to pay for a new game.

It will be interesting to see if this strategy of including free Xbox 360 games with Xbox One titles pays off for Microsoft. This is certainly not the first time that the company has done it, as Fallout 4came with Fallout 3, and Microsft even offered all the Gears of War games with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Whether or not this actually influences pre-order numbers or overall sales remains to be seen, however.

Are you excited to play Dark Souls on Xbox One? Does the bonus of getting the first Dark Souls as a Dark Souls 3 pre-order bonus convince you to pick the game up on Xbox instead of another system? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments below.

Dark Souls 3 will be available on April 12th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
