Twitter is expected to introduce buttons later this year that will be embedded in tweets and invite users to “Buy”, or include some variation of that word. When a Twitter user clicks on the button they are said to be able to complete the purchase, including entering payment and shipping information, without ever leaving Twitter.
Re/code’s sources say that businesses who are interested in making sales through Twitter are being told to sign up with Stripe in order to facilitate the payment process.
Stripe are the makers of software that allow businesses to accept various forms of payments on website or in-app purchases. It has gained a lot of traction in the tech world and has developed a good reputation based on how easy it is to use.
Stripe is currently believed to be Twitter’s only payments partner, but whether or not Stripe will continue to be the only partner over the long term remains to be seen. Representatives from Twitter and Stripe declined comment.
Twitter has been considering integrating this kind of commerce functionality into its social network for a number of years now. The initiative finally started to gain momentum when Twitter hired former Ticketmaster CEO Nathan Hubbard to run this project last summer.
