For the most part, it’s hard for the gaming community to take feature film adaptations of games seriously, considering most all video game movies turn out awful. That being said, there’s been more optimism than usual when it comes to theAssassin’s Creed movie.
There are many reasons why people are more enthusiastic that the Assassin’s Creed movie will actually deliver in areas where other video game movies have failed, mainly because the film is being closely watched by publisher Ubisoft. And now fans have two more reasons to be excited, as two veteran and proven actors have been added to the film’s already impressive cast.
Joining star Michael Fassbender are stars Brendan Gleeson and Jeremy Irons. Irons is playing the father of Marion Cotillard’s character, whereas Gleeson is playing the father of Callum Lynch, one of the characters portrayed by Fassbender. Irons is an award-winning actor, known for his work on the stage and an exhausting amount of film roles. Meanwhile, Gleeson is an award-winning actor himself, perhaps best known in recent years for playing Mad-Eye Moody in the Harry Potter film franchise.
As far as the story is concerned, Callum Lynch is in the cinematic equivalent of Desmond Miles inAssassin’s Creed, a present-day hero that discovers one of his ancestors was an assassin. Using Animus technology, Lynch relives the memories of his assassin ancestor, a man by the name of Aguilar, in 15th century Spain. Aguilar will also be played by Michael Fassbender in the film.
Even though this plot may sound similar to fans of the franchise, as it is not unlike Desmond’s tale, the Assassin’s Creed movie is not a direct adaptation of any one particular game in the series. On the contrary, the film is actually a new addition to the Assassin’s Creed canon, with the film having connections to the games. How significant these connections actually are remains to be seen.
From what we’ve heard of the movie so far, it sounds like it will be faithful to the source material. We know that the Animus will be involved, and that it is continuing the saga of the ongoing battle between the Assassins and the Templars. The teaser poster for the film also suggests that the Eagle Vision gameplay mechanic may also play a role in the events of the film.
When it releases, the Assassin’s Creed movie will be the first feature film effort from Ubisoft Motion Pictures. Besides theRabbids Invasion television series that the studio produces, there are five other films based on Ubisoft franchises planned. This includes a Rabbids movie, as well as films based on Ghost Recon, Far Cry, Splinter Cell, and Watch Dogs. That being said, the future of the Ubisoft Motion Pictures projects may rest on the shoulders of the Assassin’s Creed movie’s success.
