The Hammer Storm update is coming to Halo 5: Guardians this week, and brings with it some community favorites including the Halo CE Pistol, Grifball, and Assault.

343 Industries detailed the contents of the next monthly update to Halo 5: Guardians today, which is bringing a batch of free content for players. Besides the usual new weapon skins, armor variants, and emblems normally seen in updates like this one, Hammer Storm will bring back some much-loved classics.

First up is the Halo: Combat Evolved pistol. Fans of the first (Bungie-developed) Halo will remember the powerhouse that was the Magnum from that game. The Halo CE Pistol will be available via Halo 5‘s REQ system in the Warzone gametype. The team at 343 has modeled the pistol to look like the classic, including the zoom-in sights. As an extra Easter egg, any enemy felled by a headshot from the Halo CE Pistol will spin around. It’s a nod to the animation that would occur when players killed Elites in Halo: Combat Evolved.

Another fan favorite returning to Halo 5 with the free update is Grifball. A game mode created by the crew at Rooster Teeth as a joke, but eventually took on a life of its own in the Halo community, Grifball is a sports game that requires players pick up a ball and take it to the enemy team’s goal.

However, getting the ball into the goal is easier said than done, as the opposition has Energy Swords and Gravity Hammers to keep their goal safe. The mode will debut with a special Grifball map developed by a community Forger. The addition of Grifball also means that the Gravity Hammer will also be added to the game.

Grifball isn’t the only new gametype being introduced in this update. Assault (formerly known as Neutral Bomb Assault) and Fiesta will also be added. Assault tasks the team with delivering the bomb to the enemy team’s side while Fiesta is a Slayer variant where a player respawns with a random weapon selection. Oddball and Ricochet, other game variants using the ball/bomb object will be available as custom games, but won’t be seeing any official playlist action, at least for now.

Lastly, a new map is being added to the game, again completely free. The map will be found inArena and is called Torque. It is a medium sized map that features plenty of routes and areas to control. During their livestream reveal, 343 said there’s potential for this map to be used in the competitive Halo World Championship series, but that would require some more work and input from professional teams.

There’s even more coming in the Hammer Storm update, and 343 Industries is showing their commitment to continue supporting Halo 5 with free content.

What about Halo 5‘s Hammer Storm update has you most excited?
