One major area of contention between Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners is the difference in the consoles’ resolutions. Despite the fact that neither console can perform at 1080p natively, many games are upscaled to the HD standard. However, this isn’t always the case, as some multi-platform games will have a higher resolution on one device over the other. This has been known to cause some heated discussions online among console fans from both sides about the value of each device.
With the launch of the Rainbow Six Siege beta this weekend, it looks like Ubisoft may be unintentionally lighting these fires once again. The developer has confirmed that the Rainbow Six Siege beta, which is currently in closed beta, is running at 1080p on PlayStation 4 and 900p on Xbox One.
For most people, the different is barely noticeable and ultimately doesn’t affect the gameplay, especially on Xbox One, which has the slightly lower resolution. However, that likely won’t stop a handful of PlayStation 4 owners from reminding the Microsoft console players about the discrepancy, possibly with a little bit of arrogance.
It’s important to remember that this is just for the beta. Ubisoft did say they may be able to squeeze a little more out of the Xbox One and bring the resolution up to match the PlayStation 4. According to the FAQ on the Rainbow Six website:
“We’re still looking to push the hardware as much as possible in order to deliver a quality experience for players and will be able to share more about the final resolution once we’re closer to release date.”
Considering the fact that Rainbow Six Siege won’t be releasing until December, it’s possible the developer will be able to take advantage of the upcoming changes coming to Xbox One in November and increase the resolution to 1080p at launch. However, even if the game releases with the 900p resolution it has now, Ubisoft may be able to patch that later, increasing the resolution after Microsoft has finalized the Xbox One’s changes.
Fortunately, both consoles should be running the Rainbow Six Siege beta at 60 fps, keeping thequick action smooth and clear. Players ought to be happy about this, since many current-gen games are still stuck at 30 fps.
Besides resolution and framerate, Ubisoft did offer one more update about the beta, letting players know they will likely have “about a 60 percent chance of starting a match successfully”. This means players may end up being more concerned about getting into a game than paying close attention to the game’s resolution.
